MBB Research Cores


An exceptional asset to cutting-edge biophysical research at UTHSCSA is offered through our biophysical core facilities. Generously supported by the institution, each facility is managed by a leading expert in the respective field. Techniques essential for biophysical and biomedical research including nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR ), Xray-crystallography ( XRAY ), analytical ultracentrifugation ( CAUMA ), bioinformatics ( BCF ), mass spectrometry ( MS ), surface plasmon resonance ( CSPR ), plus calorimetry and light scattering ( CLS ) are available to investigators. Research performed in collaboration with the core facilities can benefit from the well-established expertise and support from helpful staff and bring the latest technology to bear on your project. Graduate students enrolled in the MBB discipline benefit from access to the latest technology and are able to learn important biophysical methods.

Biomolecular NMR Core
NMR Image The Biomolecular NMR Core offers state-of-the-art high field NMR instrumentation for structural studies of biological macromolecules. The instrumentation presently available includes four-channel Bruker Avance 500, 600, and 700 MHz NMR spectrometers equipped with cryoprobes. These are state-of-the-art instruments that allow determination of three-dimensional structures of biological macromolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids, both alone and as complexes with various ligands. NMR allows to investigate biomolecular structures and interactions in solution and it is also provides information about molecular motions.
X-ray Crystallography Core Laboratory
 Image X-ray Crystallography Core Laboratory provides state-of-the-art resources to researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and to external users, enabling the detailed 3-D analyses of biological macromolecules that play important roles in human health. This is a full service core in that it not only offers access to sophisticated equipment and technologies but also offers advice and technical assistance in sample preparation. Center for Surface Plasmon Resonance (CSPR)
 Image The Center for Surface Plasmon Resonance is a component of the UTHSCSA Center for Macromolecular Interactions (CMMI) and offers access to sophisticated equipment for the study of molecular interactions using surface plasmon resonance. The facility offers experimental design, sample throughput and data analyses, as well as grant and manuscript development. Our mission is to provide researchers with state-of-the art capabilities for the characterization of protein-protein, protein-lipid, protein-nucleic acid and protein-small ligand interactions. Our facility provides for the complete characterization of a macromolecular interaction in solution. This includes a description of the kinetics, thermodynamics and assembly state of the interaction.
Mass Spectrometry Core Laboratory
 Image Recent advances in mass spectrometry instrumentation and data analysis have revolutionized the way proteins are identified and quantified in biomedical research. Mass Spectrometry Laboratory offers a wide spectrum of proteomics analysis including 1-D and 2-D electrophoresis, in-gel digestion, robotic gel spot excision, protein identification, sequence characterization of peptides, identification of post-translational modification sites.
Center for Analytical Ultracentrifugation of Macromolecules (CAUMA)
 Image Analytical ultracentrifugation is a gold-standard experimental technology for characterization of diffusion properties of proteins, protein mixtures and protein complexes in solution. The method yields information on the shape and mass of distinct macromolecular species in the sample.

This core facility also provides web and database support for users of the UltraScan software developed by us. You can use our web portal to access data associated with your sedimentation experiments, and share your data with collaborators.
Bioinformatics Core Facility
 Image The Bioinformatics Core Facility provides computational support for biologically related research disciplines. By integrating high- performance computing into current research, we facilitate leading- edge research and help principle investigators at UTHSCSA to become more computationally competitive in a broad spectrum of research applications. The facility is equipped with a 44-processor Beowulf supercomputer for parallel computation, mass storage for database and data mining application, graphics workstations for visualization and popular bioinformatics and genomics software packages.
Calorimetry and Light Scattering Core Facility
 Image The UTHSCSA Center for Light Scattering provides instrumentation and expertise in light scattering and isothermal titration calorimetry.

Instruments used include the DynaPro Nanostar from Wyatt Technologies, the VP-ITC from GE/Microcal, and the BI-200SM from Brookhaven.
